“The Dictionary of Old Believer Dialects in South America”: A New Type of a Dialect Dictionary
Abstract:
The articleprovides a description of the “Dictionary of Old Believer Dialects in South America”. The idea for this lexicographic resource was proposed by an eminent Old Believer dialect researcher, Olga G. Rovnova, who began processing her field material and published the first 716 dictionary entries. The article reflects the next stage in the dictionary’s development, with the vocabulary currently comprising over 3,000 entries. The publication contains a general description of the dictionary’s structure, as well as some examples of the lexicographic description of individual lexical items. This lexicographic set is considered unique as it contains information about the diffusion of lexical items in the dialects of Russian, historic commentary, data on the source language (for borrowed words), and a special manner of presenting phraseological units. The zonal principleof organising dictionary entries is unusual for a dialect dictionary. The dictionary materials reflect lexical dialectisms and the All-Russian lexicon which differs from Standard Russian in terms of accentology, morphology, syntax, lexicalsemantics, lexical and syntactic combinability, stylistic nuances, etc. They also include confessional lexicon, phraseological units, paroemias, and foreign words. The article also touches upon the migration of the Chasovenny Accord Old Believers to South America in the mid-20th century.
