Linguistic Representation of the Image of White Nights in the Prose of Nikolai Zhernakov
Abstract:
The article analyzes the linguistic representation of the image of white nights in the prose of one of the creators of the Northern Text of Russian literature, N. K. Zhernakov. The direct nomination of a white night in the analyzed texts most often performs the function of a subject, while a natural phenomenon can be seen as an actor. This reality can be nominated using combinations with relative adjectives indicating the time of year or month during which it occurs. Epithets define a white night in terms of the presence of light, absence of noise, length, appearance, and evaluation. In metaphors and comparisons, the manifestations of a bright summer night are likened to transparent fabrics. The significant characteristics of the white night include its special light and silence. There is a close connection between the white nights and the vastness of space, as well as witchcraft, and a fairy tale. The writer emphasizes that for all Northerners, the time of white nights is the most important and most beautiful time of the year. This period has a tangible impact on people, evoking optimism, self-confidence and at the same time anxiety, which sharpens their feelings and awakens hope.
